Moisture affects concrete construction, including walls and floors, epoxy floor coatings, and wall tiles. Epoxy flooring projects impose strict requirements on the moisture content of the base concrete: flooring contractor Xiupo Chemical once ran a test showing that at 7.04% moisture, the coating's bond shear strength was only 27% of that at 0% moisture. Foreign standards require base concrete moisture of 3–4% for coating work. In China's humid southern regions, where the humid season is long, chemical industry design and construction codes allow up to 6%. The underlying research on how excessive moisture reduces coating bond strength has been overlooked and deserves attention in future standards development.
The film formation and curing of polymer materials place special requirements on substrate moisture content, operating temperature, and relative humidity, but the codes contain no corresponding construction provisions — far behind the technical requirements in coating manufacturers' data sheets. The moisture content of the floor base affects coating adhesion and thus the quality and service life of the coating work; base moisture content is a quality-assurance item for coating projects.
Loss-on-drying, also called the heated weight-loss method, is a physical method for determining moisture: heating drives off and dries out the water in the material. The traditional and most common approach is the oven method — the sample is dried in an oven, weighed on an electronic balance before and after, and the moisture value calculated by hand... A portable moisture analyzer is a quick field moisture checker. Its overall accuracy is lower than a laboratory moisture analyzer, but it is far more reliable and accurate than the touch and judgment of an “old hand”. A calibrated portable moisture analyzer can measure a sample's moisture content on the spot; if a building material's moisture exceeds the warning threshold, it is sent to a professional laboratory for confirmation on a laboratory moisture analyzer. Thanks to easy portability and fast checks, portable moisture analyzers are widely used in incoming inspection, production floors, and spot checks in the building materials industry.
