Four Issues to Note When Using a Karl Fischer Moisture Analyzer

A Karl Fischer moisture analyzer determines any moisture in a sample (free water or water of crystallization) based on its quantitative reaction with Karl Fischer reagent of known water equivalent. When operating one, note the following four points.

1. Sealing. All liquid-line connections of the Karl Fischer reagent path—from reagent bottle to metering pump to reaction cell—must be tight, otherwise reagent leakage will directly affect results. Another consequence of poor sealing is that the reagent absorbs atmospheric moisture during testing, delaying the titration endpoint.

2. Sampling. Calibrating the reagent requires 10 mg of water—use a 10 µl syringe; the same applies to methanol and ethyl acetate. After sampling, keep the reaction cell open for as short a time as possible.

3. Cleaning. After use, drain the Karl Fischer reagent from the system and rinse it clean with methanol. Never rinse with water: water does not evaporate easily and will falsify the next reagent standardization.

4. Storage. Keep the instrument away from strong magnetic fields, otherwise the electronic display may jitter or misbehave.
