Six Ways to Reduce Electronic Balance Errors

2022-12-08

Electronic balances are easily affected by environmental factors; changes in both the measuring device and the item being weighed produce weighing errors caused by ambient humidity, temperature, vibration, electromagnetic fields, air pressure and light. The indication error of an electronic balance under specified conditions is called the intrinsic error; error caused by use beyond those conditions is called additional error.

Electronic balances are precision laboratory instruments highly prone to environmental errors. Only by identifying the sources of error can we effectively reduce weighing error and obtain more accurate results.

1. Protect the balance from vibration, dust and moisture, and avoid temperature fluctuations; high-precision balances should be placed in a temperature-controlled room. Place the balance on a firm, stable worktable. Before installation, check the accessory list and confirm all parts are present and intact;

2. Carefully clean all parts of the balance. Install it according to the manual with the correct method, then re-check that each part is installed correctly, verify the supply voltage meets requirements, and plug in the power cord.

3. During weighing, use the control and function keys correctly; select the optimal integration time and read/print at the right moment for the best results. When taring repeatedly for continuous weighing, watch out for overloading.

4. Keep the draft-shield doors closed during weighing. After use, turn off the balance, close the glass shield, cut the power and cover the balance with its dust cover.

5. Calibrate regularly from the first use; with continuous use, calibrate weekly. Use standard weights—some balances have built-in weights and calibrate automatically at the press of the CAL key. Before calibration, warm up the balance as specified in the manual and check the level; otherwise calibration will not work properly.

6. If the balance is used several times a day, simply leave it on all day: the constant internal operating temperature helps obtain accurate weighing results.
