How to Maintain the Electrode of a Karl Fischer Moisture Analyzer

The electrode is the key component; surface contamination cuts sensitivity. Long-term use on oily samples makes electrodes sluggish at the endpoint, consuming excess reagent—cleaning is then required. Contamination is invisible but sluggish responses directly affect accuracy; electrodes must be cleaned periodically, though often overlooked.

For heavy contamination, wipe with acetone-dampened paper (reuse only after full evaporation), soak in dilute nitric acid for 24 hours then rinse and dry, or reactivate with potassium dichromate for 1 minute. A quick fix exists when time is short.

Rub both ends gently with very fine sandpaper and wipe clean for immediate improvement. When idle, drain all reagent from tubes, lines, and the reaction vessel to prevent crystallization blockage. Operators who simply power off after testing show insufficient awareness that maintenance and accuracy go hand in hand.
