The Four Performance Indicators of Electronic Balances

When using an electronic balance, users care first about four properties: invariability (repeatability) of readings, correctness, sensitivity and stability. Stability refers to the stability of the balance's precision; sensitivity refers to how quickly readings respond—electronic balances are far more sensitive than mechanical balances; correctness is the accuracy of readings; and invariability is the stability of readings, i.e., their floating range—the smaller the range, the better the invariability.

1. Invariability of Electronic Balance Readings

Invariability is the degree of agreement among results when the same object is measured repeatedly under identical conditions. For electronic balances, invariability includes control of repeatability and reproducibility, control of zero position and return-to-zero error, and control of reading drift over a specified time when the balance is unloaded or loaded.

2. Correctness of Electronic Balances

Correctness is the correctness of the balance's indication—its ability to approach the true value. From an error perspective, correctness reflects the magnitude of the systematic error of the indication.

3. Sensitivity of Electronic Balances

Sensitivity is the balance's ability to detect a change in the mass placed on the pan. It can be expressed as angular sensitivity, linear sensitivity, scale-division sensitivity or digital(scale-division) sensitivity. For electronic balances, it is mainly expressed as division sensitivity or digital sensitivity. The smaller the detectable mass change, the more sensitive the balance—so sensitivity remains a key criterion of balance quality.

4. Stability of Electronic Balances

Stability is the balance's ability to return automatically to its initial equilibrium position after disturbance. For an electronic balance, equilibrium is shown by an analog or digital indication; if a momentary disturbance changes the reading but the reading returns once the disturbance is removed, the balance is stable. Stability is the primary condition for a usable electronic balance—an unstable balance simply cannot be used.
