Halogen moisture analyzers have developed rapidly in recent years and are used mainly to measure surface free moisture in solid samples: the halogen lamp heats the sample to evaporate moisture, and the moisture content of the solid is displayed directly on the electronic balance. On the same principle, a rapid halogen moisture analyzer can also determine the evaporation residue or loss on heating of certain samples.
The rapid halogen moisture analyzer evolved from the rapid infrared moisture analyzer; the main difference is the heating source. The halogen analyzer uses a halogen lamp, while the infrared analyzer uses a far-infrared dark-field heater. Because the lamps differ in structure and principle, they also affect test results to some extent. A halogen lamp resembles an ordinary fluorescent tube, except that it is filled with halogen gas; the voltage across its ends makes it glow and heat. An infrared lamp, as the name suggests, heats by infrared radiation.
Advantages of the halogen lamp: fast, uniform heating that rarely decomposes the sample. The infrared lamp (spherical), because of its structure, heats more slowly and unevenly—the center gets hotter than the edges—which introduces error. In addition, infrared radiation can decompose some special samples and affect results. Because of these structural drawbacks, rapid infrared moisture analyzers have largely been phased out of the market.
