In essence there is no difference between Karl Fischer and halogen moisture analyzers—both rapidly measure a sample's moisture to meet experimental requirements. Simply put, the Karl Fischer moisture analyzer is a chemical analysis method, while the halogen moisture analyzer is a physical analysis method; users choose according to the sample's characteristics. Below we explain the differences between the two.
The Karl Fischer moisture analyzer determines moisture chemically. Developed from the method proposed by Karl Fischer in 1935, it is listed as the standard method for moisture determination in many substances. Simple to operate and highly accurate, it is the ideal instrument for moisture testing in petroleum, chemicals, electric power, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and research institutions.

The halogen moisture analyzer uses a halogen lamp as its drying heat source, integrating the heat source (like an oven) and an analytical balance into one rapid-measurement instrument. Its ring halogen lamp dries the sample quickly; during drying, the analyzer continuously measures and instantly displays the moisture lost, and locks in the final moisture value when drying is complete. With intelligent operation, most samples are measured in minutes—a new type of rapid testing instrument.
Karl Fischer and rapid moisture analyzers each have their own strengths. Users should choose based on the type of material to be measured, cost control, and other factors.
