Zener Medical purchased the VicoMeter WKT-A9 'Exquisite' Karl Fischer Moisture Analyzer together with the WKT-V2 Karl Fischer oven auxiliary heating device. Based on the coulometric Karl Fischer principle, the WKT-A9 'Exquisite' determines moisture content in samples and can rapidly measure moisture in liquids, solids, and gases. It is widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, plastics, food, lithium battery, testing, petroleum, power, and pesticide industries, as well as in universities and research institutions. For samples that cannot be added directly to the electrolytic cell, gas-phase extraction is the perfect solution: the sample is placed in a sample boat/vial, transferred into the WKT-V2 Karl Fischer oven, and heated to a specific temperature (up to 300˚C). Moisture is extracted by dry air or nitrogen and transferred to the titration vessel, where the moisture concentration is then determined by the Karl Fischer analyzer.

When measuring moisture with a Karl Fischer analyzer, most samples can be added directly to the generator cell/titration cell for simple, accurate testing. Some samples, however, cannot be added directly because their moisture is not released naturally or they undergo side reactions with the Karl Fischer reagent — for example powders, granules, pastes, and oxidizing inorganic salts.

For samples that cannot be added directly to the cell, pairing the WKT-V2 Karl Fischer oven for gas-phase extraction is the perfect solution. The sample is placed in a vial and moved onto the oven, heated to a specific temperature (up to 300˚C), and the moisture is extracted and carried into the cell by dry air or nitrogen, then measured perfectly.

VicoMeter at the Customer Site

The customer purchased the VicoMeter WKT-A9 Karl Fischer Moisture Analyzer and WKT-V2 Karl Fischer oven mainly to test moisture in degradable medical sutures. According to national standards, testing medical sutures requires a Karl Fischer oven plus a coulometric Karl Fischer moisture analyzer. The oven temperature is 130±5℃, and the ambient humidity must be below 10%. Such humidity conditions are difficult to achieve in a normal environment — reaching them requires either a major laboratory renovation or the purchase of a professional-grade glove box. The customer had previously brought samples to the VicoMeter laboratory for testing: results measured in a normal environment were around 2000PPM, while results measured in a professional environment were all below 500PPM, meeting the customer's requirements. When the VicoMeter technical engineer arrived at the customer's site, the glove box had not yet been installed, so the engineer could only explain the instrument's operating steps in detail and then perform standardization and verification with pure water. The results were very stable and the customer was satisfied, but no sample testing was performed — the customer will conduct the tests themselves later.
