Halogen Moisture Analyzer

A halogen moisture analyzer is a loss-on-drying moisture analyzer that uses a halogen lamp as the heating source — an instrument that determines moisture content by physical analysis. The traditional drying method uses the oven method: based on the principle of moisture evaporation by heating, the material is dried, and the material is weighed on a balance before and after drying to calculate moisture content. However, the oven method takes 2-4 hours per sample, which is inefficient. For enterprises with fast-paced production, the oven method severely affects production efficiency and can no longer meet their needs.

The halogen moisture analyzer is an integrated upgrade of the traditional oven method, perfectly combining the heating module, weighing module, operation module, and human-machine intelligent module. With one-touch start, results are displayed directly on the screen, and the moisture change curve throughout the heating process is displayed in real time, visualizing the sample moisture status.

Ring Halogen Lamp

Lamps filled with halogen gas such as iodine or bromine are collectively called halogen lamps. The working principle of a halogen lamp is as follows:

When the filament heats up, tungsten atoms evaporate and move toward the glass tube wall. Near the wall, the tungsten vapor cools to about 800°C and combines with halogen atoms to form tungsten halide (tungsten iodide or tungsten bromide). The tungsten halide then continues moving toward the center of the tube and returns to the hot filament. Because tungsten halide is a very unstable compound, it decomposes again into halogen vapor and tungsten when heated, and the tungsten redeposits on the filament, compensating for the evaporated portion. Thanks to this special regenerative cycle, the filament's service life is extended — almost 4 times that of an incandescent filament; VicoMeter halogen lamps last up to 6000 hours. Meanwhile, because the filament can operate at higher temperatures, it offers higher brightness, higher color temperature, and higher luminous efficiency.

Traditional halogen lamps are spherical, acting like a spotlight during heating. When testing samples, heat concentrates on one spot — on one hand, this easily scorches the center of the sample; on the other hand, it causes uneven heating, where some areas are fully dried while moisture in other areas has not yet evaporated, leading to unstable or even inaccurate readings.

Against this background, after continuous exploration, VicoMeter developed "a high-efficiency drying heater (high-quality ring halogen lamp)." This halogen lamp adopts a ring design that heats the sample surface uniformly during testing, leaving the sample state unchanged before and after measurement, with better stability — and it has been widely praised by users since its launch.

Functions and Buying Guide of Halogen Moisture Analyzers

Measuring the moisture content of samples is the basic function of a halogen moisture analyzer. From the principle of the halogen moisture analyzer, we can see that the two key factors determining its accuracy are weighing and temperature. Therefore, on the basis of instrument quality assurance, temperature calibration and weight calibration are two very important functions.

Most halogen moisture analyzers on the domestic market only offer weighing calibration while neglecting temperature calibration. As an expert in moisture detection, the VicoMeter VM-E series was the first to implement and open the temperature calibration function (invention patent: [A moisture analyzer with automatic temperature calibration]; application no.: CN202211060232.7; publication no.: CN115127957A). The dual calibration function has been widely praised by the market since its launch.

A halogen moisture analyzer with both weight calibration and temperature calibration gives you more accurate data and a better user experience during testing, ensuring reliable measurement results throughout the instrument's entire lifecycle.

Halogen moisture analyzers are widely used in pharmaceuticals, the chemical industry, electronics & semiconductors, plastic raw materials, rubber, tobacco, tea, food, starch, feed, coal, molding sand, sewage sludge, dairy, and other fields. Because different industries have different moisture testing requirements, many additional functions have been developed to meet these needs. When looking for an instrument suitable for your enterprise, you can start from the following points:

  • Accuracy of the halogen moisture analyzer.Samples with very low moisture content require very high weighing accuracy, while samples with higher moisture content generally have relatively lower weighing accuracy requirements. This has led to halogen moisture analyzers with different weighing accuracies; common market options include 5mg, 2mg, 1mg, and 0.1mg, and enterprises can choose according to their actual situation;

  • Display units of the halogen moisture analyzer.Different industries define moisture differently, so instruments display different moisture units. Common ones include moisture content MC%, dry content DC%, dry-weight ratio AM%, wet-weight ratio AD%, moisture regain, etc. The display can be freely switched according to user needs. Some special industries may need other units, such as mg/m³ (moisture content per unit area of the sample surface). VicoMeter can customize solutions according to user needs to meet any of your sample testing requirements;

  • Heating modes of the halogen moisture analyzer.Because sample characteristics differ — for example, some samples are temperature-sensitive — different heating methods are required. Therefore, the instrument should provide modes such as standard heating, step heating, rapid heating, and gentle heating to meet the heating needs of different samples.

  • Shut-off modes of the halogen moisture analyzer.The shut-off mode refers to how heating stops after the sample's moisture is dried. For general samples, the automatic shut-off mode suffices — fully automatic one-touch moisture detection, automatic shut-off, and result display, meeting the needs of over 90% of users. In addition, timed shut-off and manual shut-off modes are available to meet the testing needs of specific samples, such as material property research. Timed shut-off: set the heating time; heating stops when the countdown ends. Manual shut-off: heating continues until manually turned off (operators must not leave during this mode).

  • Dynamic curve of the halogen moisture analyzer.For users who need to observe moisture change trends during sample testing, the dynamic moisture curve is essential. It not only reflects the moisture change state during heating, but also helps users judge the rationality of the current sample test (the moisture change trend of the same sample is consistent).

  • User management permissions of the halogen moisture analyzer.Some industries require instruments to have user management permissions — for example, pharmaceutical companies require raw data to be recorded (deletion or modification prohibited). Therefore, the instrument needs different management permissions, such as super administrator, operator, and query, allowing account-based, permission-based management of the instrument.

  • Data communication of the halogen moisture analyzer.For users who need to manage data — such as data printing, uploading data to a computer, or uploading to a management platform — data interfaces are particularly important. Instruments generally need an RS232 serial port, expandable to PC, printer, PLC communication, LIMS management platform, networked management platform, etc.;

  • Other requirements.Moisture exists in almost all substances, and moisture detection involves all walks of life, so user needs vary. VicoMeter can provide suitable solutions according to user needs.
