The Karl Fischer moisture analyzer, also called a trace moisture analyzer, is based on the quantitative reaction with Karl Fischer reagent of known water equivalent. It can determine any moisture in a sample (free water or water of crystallization). So what is the basic principle behind its operation?
The VicoMeter WKT-C9 uses the volumetric principle, detecting down to 10ppm and measuring solids, liquids, and powders within 30 seconds; its RS232 port connects printers, balances, and computers, and it stores 200 data sets for instant
The Karl Fischer moisture analyzer offers many advantages in use. Its measuring range is remarkably wide, and compared with traditional instruments it is highly efficient—greatly improving laboratory productivity.
Karl Fischer titration is the classic method of moisture determination. Unlike oven drying or infrared lamp methods—which measure all volatiles driven off by heating—Karl Fischer titration measures the actual water content of the sample.
Petroleum products are now used everywhere, and water—one of the quality indicators for petroleum products—strongly affects their quality. It enters during transport and storage, or is absorbed and dissolved from contact with the atmosphere and water.
In essence both rapidly measure sample moisture: Karl Fischer is chemical analysis, halogen is physical; choose by sample characteristics. Below we explain
Loss-on-drying is the conventional method; halogen analyzers are the market mainstream—heating more uniformly than far-infrared and far faster than ovens.
Developed rapidly in recent years, it mainly detects surface free moisture in solids: halogen heating volatilizes water, displayed directly on the balance.
