The instrument commissioned for the customer this time was the A7 coulometric Karl Fischer moisture analyzer. The VicoMeter WKT-A7 Fully Automatic Trace Moisture Analyzer integrates a number of advanced patented technologies. Its measurement principle is the world-recognized classic method for moisture determination [coulometric Karl Fischer method], with a measurement range down to 0.0001% (1ppm). It can rapidly determine moisture content in liquids, solids, and gases within 60 seconds and is widely used in the chemical, petroleum, power, research, and railway industries, where moisture content is one of the key indicators of product quality. Multiple built-in moisture calculation formulas meet the needs of different users; equipped with a high-efficiency micro printer and a large-capacity memory storing up to 500 test records, its convenient retrieval allows users to easily review and print test reports.

VicoMeter at the Customer Site

The customer had previously used a Karl Fischer moisture analyzer themselves, but the response time was long and repeatability was poor. Upon arriving at Shaanxi Licai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., the VicoMeter technical engineer first inspected the instrument the customer had installed and found that the electrolysis electrode and measuring electrode were plugged in reversed, and that the customer's Karl Fischer reagent had expired. The customer's operator also reported that they did not know how to use automatic liquid aspiration and drainage. The A7 is an automated Karl Fischer moisture analyzer with automatic aspiration and drainage; to activate these functions, the power switch must be flipped to the opposite side.

After resolving these minor issues, the VicoMeter technical engineer prepared to run tests for the customer, only to learn that the customer's sample was a lyophilized powder with a moisture content of 1%–5%. A coulometric Karl Fischer moisture analyzer is a trace moisture tester: it electrolytically generates iodine, which reacts with water, and the moisture content is calculated from the electricity consumed. When the moisture content is too high, electrolysis takes a long time, and prolonged electrolysis heats the electrolysis electrode, affecting measurement accuracy. Although the coulometric Karl Fischer analyzer can measure the moisture in lyophilized powder, it is not the optimal choice. After hearing our explanation, the customer understood and ultimately used a volumetric Karl Fischer moisture analyzer to test the lyophilized powder.

Different samples require different instruments, and every sample has its own characteristics. If customers are not familiar with these differences, it is better to choose a professional company that can provide a professional solution.
