When measuring moisture with a Karl Fischer analyzer, most samples can be added directly to the generator cell/titration cell for simple, accurate testing. Some samples, however, cannot be added directly because their moisture is not released naturally or they undergo side reactions with the Karl Fischer reagent — for example powders, granules, pastes, and oxidizing inorganic salts.

For samples that cannot be added directly to the cell, pairing the WKT-V2 Karl Fischer oven for gas-phase extraction is the perfect solution. The sample is placed in a vial and moved onto the oven, heated to a specific temperature (up to 300˚C), and the moisture is extracted and carried into the cell by dry air or nitrogen, then measured perfectly.

VicoMeter at the Customer Site

The customer's sample is an organic substance soluble in methanol, with low moisture content and a relatively high price. The customer already had a volumetric instrument, but testing with a volumetric instrument inevitably requires a larger sample size to ensure accuracy, resulting in significant sample waste. The VicoMeter WKT-A9 'Exquisite' Karl Fischer trace moisture analyzer needs only about 50mg of sample to accurately measure its moisture content.

After arriving at the customer's site, the VicoMeter technical engineer first installed and commissioned the instrument, then verified it with deionized water: 2ul of deionized water was injected into the sample boat, and three tests gave results of 1937ug, 1942ug, and 1932ug — good repeatability and accurate results. The customer was very satisfied with the VicoMeter instrument. For insoluble solids and expensive samples, VicoMeter's WKT-V1-A9 is an excellent choice for moisture testing.
